Japan tip-toed into the last 16 of the World Cup on the fair play pic5678 ruling, losing 1-0 to Poland in Volgograd but benefiting from Colombia's defeat of Senegal in Samara.Centre-back Jan Bednarek volleyed the 59th-minute winner to give Poland a first win and a modicum of honour restored after two defeats in Group H.The Blue Samurai needed a point - but circumstances also allowed for a defeat - following a 2-1 victory over Colombia and a 2-2 draw against Senegal. After going behind they were staring exit in the face, their situation then improving when Colombia took the lead against Senegal. Now they did not necessarily need an equalizer but had to avoid yellow cards in order to stay above Senegal in the points system. The players were well away of events in Samara and the match ended with boos ringing out as the Japanese simply passed the ball among themselves, with no attempt to get forward in shades of Austria v West Germany at the 1982 World Cup.There was a tense wait at the end before the players could congratulate themselves on going through second in the group behind Colombia. Poor Senegal, with the same points and goal difference as Japan, go home.Their exit means the African continent will not be represented in the last 16 for the first time since the round was introduced in 1986.Colombia will now be up up against the second-placed team from Group G in Moscow on Tuesday. Japan play the Group G winner on Monday in Rostov-on-Don.In the stifling heat of the Volgograd Arena, the 42,189 spectators always seemed to have half an eye on events in the parallel group game in Samara. It was a fairly even affair, but Japan went behind when Bednarek had space for a side-foot volley into the net from Rafal Kurzawa's 59-minute free-kick.Poland coach Adam Nawalka had made five changes. pic5678 Lukasz Fabianski was preferred in goal to Wojciech Szczesny while veteran defender Kamil Glik, sorely missed in the first two games, returned following a shoulder injury.Fabianski was soon in action when he got down to save to his right from Yoshinori Muto in the 13th minute, while at the other end Japan keeper Eiji Kawashima rescued his side with a magnificent save when he clawed a Kamil Grosicki header off the line in the 32nd.Kawashima was out quickly to intercept a pass to Piotr Zielinski in a promising counter-attack and made another fine save to keep out a deflection from team-mate Tomoaki Makino.Japan coach Akira Nishino had made made six changes with Shinji Kagawa, captain Makoto Hasebe and Takashi Inui, the latter both on yellow cards, left on the bench. In the end both coaches could claim to be winners, with Japan through to the last 16 for the third time at their sixth World Cup and Poland avoiding the fate of being the first Polish team to leave a World Cup without a win. pic5678
